THE U-505 CAPTURE: 1944-1947
The U-505 was a German submarine in the Kriegsmarine during World War II. It was captured by the US Navy Task Group 22.3 in 1944. Most members survived the attack and were taken as prisoners. The POWs were kept completely isolated, which was a direct breach of the Geneva Convention of 1929. Their letters home were held by the US government, which did not want anybody to know that the U-505 was captured because they found an Enigma machine on board that allowed them to decipher Germany's codes. The POWs even tried to contact the outside world with makeshift balloons with messages on them.
This shows that the Allies were also breaching the Geneva Conventions. We can use this to infer that the Geneva Conventions were becoming handicapped worldwide, not just by the 'evil' Axis powers.
