The Second Geneva Convention (also known as the Geneva Convention of 1909) was a revision of the original of 1864. It grew to include prisoners of war who were shipwrecked or taken as prisoners at sea, or any general naval distress. It also gave special protection to hospital ships. The fast-growing navies of the major world powers made this convention necessary.
